Community Cam is an amazing resource, that has been underutilised in many areas throughout the country. Private households and businesses can register their cameras on the Community Cam database and Police can access the site to see where the neighbourhood cameras are located and then view footage to solve crime. The site is only accessible to police who then contact camera owners and request footage that will assist with solving crime.
In Waitaki, Neighbourhood Support works closely with the Police and coordinator Christine Dorsey was keen to assist Community Constable Rachael Osborn in her quest to get more cameras registered on the site. A promotion was launched through the generous donation of a hamper from Mitre 10. Anyone who logged their camera during February or March went into the prize draw to win the hamper. This encouraged people to get on board and it was promoted as a way of contributing to a safer community and playing a part in crime prevention.
The local media, Oamaru Mail and the Waitaki App got behind the campaign and Facebook posts and newsletters were also used to remind people to register their camera and be entered in the draw.
At the start of April, the Police drew out a winner - Harry Andrews - who visited the Police station to receive the prize.
Constable Osborn reported that the number of cameras registered had quadrupled during the two-month long promotion. A fantastic result!
However, there are still hundreds of unregistered cameras around the vast Waitaki area, so the focus will continue throughout the year. The ongoing work will involve working with all suppliers of security cameras in the area, so people are given a flyer explaining Community Cam whenever a camera is purchased. Some outlets have also suggested information cards on Community Cam so people can become informed about this initiative and Neighbourhood Support has applied for funding to get such cards printed.
This has been a wonderful and very successful collaboration between Neighbourhood Support, the Police and the Waitaki community. Plus, it will be ongoing, due to the support of the local businesses, who are willing to promote the registration of cameras on the Community Cam site.
