NSNZ Welcome New Community Advisor and 3 New Activators
Updated: Sep 4
July/August 2024 – New Zealand
We are thrilled to announce the appointment of a Community Advisor for the Top of the South Region – welcoming the lovely Katie Thompson who will bring passion, energy and creativity to the newly established role. We’d like to acknowledge the efforts of the outgoing TSNS Board in ensuring the very best outcome for the existing membership, along with the overwhelming support of local partners and stakeholders who have pledged ongoing collaboration under this new model.
"Kia ora, I’m Katie! I grew up in sunny Nelson and went to university in Christchurch where I also took time off to go explore the world, first solo and then again with my partner Flynn. I have now happily settled back in Nelson which is place I am proud to call home.
I have a background in geography and sustainability. I gained my master’s in environmental science from the University of Canterbury where I learnt about both physical and social geography. From my studies, work and personal life I have developed a passion for connecting communities and believe that “Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini- My strength is not that of the individual, but that of the collective”.
In my spare time I love to teach yoga, surf, and spend time outdoors in nature whether it be camping in a remote place or just relaxing outside in the sunshine at home. I am lucky that the Top of the South has plenty of the great outdoors to enjoy and is peaceful and beautiful place to live.
My goal in the role of Community Advisor for Neighbourhood Support is to get the Top of the South region connected and thriving, developing a safe, happy, and resilient place to live for all."
Neighbourhood Support New Zealand in conjunction with the NZ Police, Auckland Council and the Albert-Eden, Puketāpapa, Ōrākei and Howick Local Boards are very pleased to announce that we have hired our new Activators for these areas.
Tahi Moppborren will be covering the Albert-Eden and Puketāpapa Local Board areas. The Albert-Eden Local Board includes the established suburbs of Pt Chevalier, Waterview, Mt Albert, Mt Eden, Kingsland, Balmoral, Epsom, Greenlane, Greenwoods Corner, Sandringham, Ōwairaka, Eden Terrace and Western Springs. The Puketāpapa Local Board borders the Manukau Harbour and includes the suburbs of Three Kings, Mt. Roskill, Hillsborough, Waikowhai, Lynfield and Wesley.
"Kia ora I’m Tahi, I live in in Tāmaki Makaurau above the Mount Albert Shops in an 1920’s apartment with my partner and our two kids. I was born in California, and grew up on the Kapiti Coast with my migrant Dutch family and my Pākehā farming whānau who call the South Island home and whakapapa to the Shetland Islands and Wales.
I hope to bring skills from my background working in performing arts and arts access sectors - as an actor, teaching artist and facilitator - to nurture collaboration. Supporting champions, new members and groups to find their courage, confidence and curiosity, to have fun, problem solve together and learn alongside each other.
As a free-lance creative I co-founded Sweet Beats Ltd to initiate projects - most recently a Creatives in School Documentary Film Collaboration visiting Te Noho Kotahitanga Marae with iwi artists, families and tamariki from Gladstone Primary School.
I also champion Mind Over Manner public workshops about ‘Neurodiversity’ that utilize performance tools to host discussions between teachers, families, local police, and the wider community to advocate for children who are in takiwatanga ‘in their own space and time’.
Over the last ten years work with Playcentre Aotearoa and Mixit Refugee Youth Arts, I’ve seen the power of grass roots organisations to create multi-generational belonging for diverse households with busy city lives through inclusive networks of support .
And I’m super excited to join Neighbourhood Support in their vision to encourage resilience, face to face connections, and thriving communities street by street!"
Tiffany Crombie will cover the Ōrākei Local Board area which includes Ōrākei, Mission Bay, Kohimarama, St Heliers, Glendowie, St Johns, Stonefields, Meadowbank, Remuera and parts of Ellerslie.
"Hello my name is Tiffany Crombie.
I am a proud local, having spent my early years in Glendowie and St Johns, and the last 15 years in Ōrākei.
My son attends the local primary school, and I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Sociology, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Business with a major in Marketing. With over 20 years of experience in marketing, primarily in the finance and insurance sectors, I bring a wealth of knowledge to my new role.
In my free time, you can find me exploring the area on my e-bike, attending community education classes at Selwyn, or enjoying a day out on our boat. I love living in this beautiful area and am truly excited about my new role at Neighbourhood Support as the Ōrākei Community Activator."
Andrew Poon will cover some of the Howick Local Board area - Pakuranga, Beachlands, Flat Bush, Ormiston and East Tamaki. The Howick Neighbourhood Support Committee is very active and they service Howick and Botany.
"Kia ora Howick, my name is Andrew your new Howick Community Activator for Neighbourhood Support NZ.
I was born and raised in Auckland and have been a resident in the Howick ward for nearly 25 years.
The Howick ward contributes a very special part to New Zealand's growing identity and future. Statistically, we are the most ethnically, culturally and religiously diverse in the country and with our exciting diversity and unique identity, our communities have enormous opportunities to connect and strengthen our neighbourhoods.
I am excited to meet and greet our community as we help facilitate to hone in our strengths building towards a more resilient and connected ward.
My family heritage is Malaysian and when not reading, enjoying buffets or out with family/friends, I am an avid swimmer and play second row in rugby.
See you out there!"
