Neighbourhood Support Taupō regularly organises free ‘3 Steps For Life’ basic CPR & AED use training sessions for local residents with Hato Hone St John.
Taupō District Council supports the initiative by helping with advertising the sessions and providing us with venues free of charge.
Participants of the '3 Steps for Life' sessions often chat with us after the session and say they now feel confident and capable to act in an emergency situation and were glad they had come along to learn. Many are also interested to learn about and join Neighbourhood Support.
Our May theme is "Supporting Our Young People", so I think it's worth pointing out that '3 Steps for Life' sessions aren't just for adults - young people aged 13+ can also benefit from the sessions.
Over the past year we’ve had parents bringing their teenagers along to our basic CPR & AED use training sessions. One Mum, Victoria, attended with her teenagers age 13 and 15, with hope that the experience would give them the confidence to be proactive and help in an emergency.
“I think the more people who know how to do CPR the better... It's the equivalent of having more resources in the community.”
Victoria's daughter, age 13, said she now feels more confident in her ability to respond to emergencies after completing the training and was surprised at how deeply you need to press on the chest during compressions. “Being able to help others and improve their chances of survival” was one way she thought young people like herself could contribute to making a positive difference in the community, and she would definitely encourage others her age to learn CPR.
Victoria's advice for any parents thinking about getting their own kids involved with CPR training is to take up the opportunity when available: “They now know how to source the nearest AED on their phone, and they will be quicker getting it than I would be. Plus, giving CPR compressions is actually exhausting. Having someone else about who knows what to do to help is a great support.”
To organise a free '3 Steps for Life' session you can reach out to St John via their website, or even easier, contact the Taupō Neighbourhood Support office and jump onto one of our upcoming sessions.
