Neighbourhood Support Manawatu works with Police, Manawatu District Council and other community and social organisations to build safe, resilient and connected communities in Manawatu.
We promote connectedness and community safety, educate about crime prevention, and support community leaders to establish and maintain contact lists for their streets and areas.
Our core work revolves around engaging the community, sharing information and connecting people to other community services. We also run some programmes aimed at improving social, cognitive and physical wellbeing in our community, and we support Manawatu District Council's efforts to prepare our communities for civil defence emergencies.
We run an intergenerational buddy reading programme in nine schools across our district. We have volunteer 'buddies' who visit schools for an hour a week, to read with and interact with children. Students and buddies gain much benefit from interactions across generations.
We are currently seeking funding to allow us to commence out Rural transport Initiative on 1 July 2023. We currently have support from Horizons Regional Council and Manawatu District Council for our bespoke on-demand service giving those in rural communities access to Feilding for business, health and social visits.
